Chapter Ten

Chase caught Miranda as she swooned, the painkillers acting as a sleeping agent, probably because they were meant for a guy his size and not hers. Keeping her injured arm in mind, he swept her into his arms and carried her into his room, placing her in his bed. The tattered remains of her clothing offended him and stank of blood and disinfectant, so he took a quick moment to tear them from her body, revealing absolute perfection.

He stood back to stare at her for a moment, knowing he should avert his gaze, but unable to keep himself from drinking her in. As he’d noticed, she possessed perfect breasts, pillowy ones with large nipples that puckered as he watched. Her creamy flesh appeared silky smooth and complemented her rounded figured. The hair of her pubes—nicely trimmed into a heart—perfectly matched the platinum sheen on her head, and surprised him because most women tended to keep themselves bare these days.

Having drunk an eyeful, and feeling slightly guilty about it, he drew a sheet up over her. Veering his attention from her delectable body, he mused over the events of the day. Questions tumbled in his mind about who she really was, and what she knew about the kidnapping. But, even more pressing, the truth of his feelings for her fought to break free. The urge to sink himself in her body—permanently—remained present, but an odd need to protect her, to seek vengeance for her injuries, rode him even harder.

Just remembering the way she’d placed herself in danger to guard him against harm imbued him with warmth because he knew she cared, but it also flushed him with an icy cold with fear that she could have gotten killed. It also made him burn hot with anger that someone dared harm a silken hair on her head. She’s mine. That claim kept repeating itself in his head, over and over. Worse, the more it bounced around in his mind, the more he wanted it to be true. He wanted Miranda, not just for one night, or a few days, but a lifetime.

However, a new dilemma surfaced as it came to him that all the flirting and care she’d shown toward him might have been nothing more than a sham, a way to get close to him as part of her job. Victor had implied that Chase was an unknowing part of a secret operation of which Miranda had knowledge. Were the moments they’d shared together real?

Perhaps she felt nothing for him at all other than some lust—because even she couldn’t fake the scent of passion.

Did he dare put himself on a limb when she could so carefully break it out from under him by telling him her actions were nothing more than an act because of some secret FUC operation?

The idea he might have fallen for her, fallen for a lie, should have angered him. Made him rampage. Sent him running for the honey. Instead, it bolstered his resolve.

Maybe I started out as a mission for her, but by Ursa, I refuse to believe that’s all it is.
